The Fortune 500 is a ranking of the top 500 American public corporations (or private companies which publicly publish their revenue numbers) as measured by gross revenue and published annually by Fortune Magazine. The Fortune 100 is a frequently used term used to reference the top 100 firms in this same list and is what fortune100s.com focuses on. Because the list is based on gross revenue, this is not a representation of the most profitable American public companies (Net Profit), but simply the companies that bring in the most cash without consideration to expenses. Fortune 100 companies tend to be the anchor companies in each industry, however they are not always household names.

The Fortune 1000 refers to the top 1000 firms ranked according to the same methodology.
